Thank you for that! I’ll give it a read.

After reading the above links about battery tech, you may want to introduce yourself to how EVs are impacting tyre tech, tyre manufacturers are trying to quickly cope: https://arstechnica.com/cars/2021/12/why-electric-vehicle-tires-are-challenging-to-make/

The commentariat of ars community is very mature, most of them have personal experiences and have undertaken the effort to maintain detailed logs from which they can draw stats and inferences. The comments section is spanning over 7 pages now and is definitely worth the read.

In conclusion the EVs chew through tyres very fast which in itself is another type of environmental issue since manufacture, disposal and recycling of rubber tyres also have environmental costs.

Yeah it’s crazy lmao. I watched a video on the deconstruction of the high power Tesla batteries commonly used in the Type S and Type X and I was shook upon finding that those cells literally looked like the cells used in laptop battery packs. Of course they’re different cells with different chemical construction, but lmao. Quite a simple approach. Thousands of cells connected to each other ended with a connection to a BMS.

simple tiny cell batteries

Yeap the regular EV batteries just use lots of 18650 cells.

Could you find a link or a source that shows how these batteries work? I’m interested and keen to know, if big shots like Toyota and Tesla want it in their lineup, certainly it must be really good.
So far, in the case of Tesla at least, they have been using simple tiny cell batteries all connected in series/parallel to each other working as one huge unit.
Simple and effective, but greatly increases the weight of the vehicle, which in turn reduces range.

The car will use BYD’s lithium-iron-phosphate Blade battery and is intended to help Toyota learn the ropes of making a low-cost EVs.”

Wow. The “Japanese giants” learning new things from Chinese companies. Wonder what the Toyota fan section has to say about that.

Toyota was to do the same with the bZ4x and use the BYD blade batteries. But that was not done for some reason. Now Toyota is again going with BYD for this low cost sedan. Good.

The BYD blade batteries are designed in such a way that they are very rigid and they themselves become a part of the load bearing body frame structure. That negates the need for a strong battery compartment constructed separately to house the batteries as the batteries themselves become part of the structure. That means more batteries could be housed in the same space extending the range. Read up on them. They are quite interesting. BYD has been using them in their own EV Cars and SUVs for some years now so the tech is tried and trusted. Tesla will also be using the BYD Blade batteries in their up coming cheap “below $25,000” EV.
