The way they have taxed drum brakes, looks like disc brakes will be a cheaper option – and all the vehicles that needlessly come with rear-drum brakes (or in case of motorcycles, trucks and buses which come with drum brakes on all axles) will be upgraded to discs, examples include Hilux, City, Swift which should be fitted with disc brakes anyway because at least in the case of Swift the technology does exist in the higher trims in other countries.

They didn’t tax ABS modules, ABS sensors, ABS wirings either so theoretically it could pave a way towards the 100% all-channel ABS discs dream.

With current government policies, it’s unlikely that anyone would want to achieve localization as it is simply not profitable. Government needs to make incentives and policies that ensure localization but also makes sure that it doesn’t stagnate as assembly only with zero competition.

Good news! such taxes are long over due. It should also be made abundantly clear to these local assemblers that the goal here is also achieving exports. Those companies with exports will have a lower tax bracket than those with no exports of any kind i.e., parts and/or CBU cars.

Either they will leave or increase the prices but won’t step up to initiate localisation
