yes but I think Toyota existed back in the 1900s and they were truly the only guys that invented celebrity endorsements. There is even an old mural of a Toyota executive giving Genghis Khan a brand new 1220 model Toyota Horserolla. Therefore I will completely ignore your statement and proceed to call you a heretic while I endorse in blind country of origin based brand loyalty. /s

Fun fact, such endorsements can trace their roots back a few hundred years (using endorsements by royalty or nobility). Using celebrity names on products really took off in the early 1900s in the US where different companies used the big name stars/sport stars at the time such Babe Ruth, Ty Cobbs etc. to sell their products. Big stars such as Clark Gable did car ads for Dodge back in the 1930s as well as other star. For example, here is an ad by VW for their beetle in the 1960s. Hope the link works.

Celebrity endorsements have always been a good way to push products. The more famous their chose celebrity the more reach that celebrity will have (Instagram, twitter, YouTube etc.) the more exposure for the target product.
As media has progressed, so has the level of involvement by the celebrity. In the old days they might have been paid for just using their name. Later that expanded to pictures or spoken statements as print media and radio became more common. Now with media being everywhere, the celebrities chosen, can and do have to have a more involved role.

That is why people like Toyota, it innovated the ideas related to supply chain management. Most of their strategies from 90s are now being observed by new generation of automakers.
