WagonR, once used to be the bestselling car in Pak Suzuki’s lineup (after Mehran) is currently experiencing terrible sales. The Suzuki tallboy hatchback is suffering from a -73% decline in sales as only 2,168 units were sold in the first quarter of the current fiscal year. For the sake of comparison, the WagonR sold 7,889 units in the same period of previous fiscal year 2018-19.
Sales of WagonR currently averages 722 units a month, which is almost 7 times less than that of newly launched Alto 660cc. Currently the best seller in Pak Suzuki’s lineup, the Alto sold 4,924 units in September 2019 alone– marking its best ever figures since launch. The entry level hatchback has sold 12,943 units so far in the first quarter of current fiscal year, and makes up more than the combined sales figures of all the rest of Suzuki models currently on sale.
As analyzed by us, the Alto 660cc has taken the major chunk of buyers away from WagonR. It’s primarily because the Pak Suzuki WagonR is a heavily underspec vehicle. The most expensive Wagon R VXL variant cost PKR 16.25 lac, however it has no airbags, no ABS, no power mirrors, only 2 power windows etc.
Compared to this the VXL variant of Alto 660cc that cost PKR 15.18 lac offers dual airbags, ABS, power mirrors, all 4 power windows and best of all comes nearly 100,000 cheaper than the Wagon R VXL. Although Pak Suzuki has made 2 major price revisions ever since the Alto was introduced 3 months ago, sales are soaring as there is no competition available and import of used JDMs have already been curbed by the government. Alto 660cc sales are also helping Pak Suzuki subdue its losses since sparing Alto, the company is suffering from a -68% decline in sales.
Pak Suzuki is currently in process of introducing the Wagon R AGS that will likely be launched in the next couple of months. However we believe it’s the short of equipment and a rather unusual shape that’s costing WagonR in numbers rather than an AGS transmission. Only time will tell whether the introduction of WagonR automatic will help recover from the diminishing sales.
