The used car imports showed the people how far behind we were and made the people demand better.”

This statement couldn’t be any true. If it weren’t for the 660cc imported kei cars like Daihatsu Mira, Daihatsu Move etc. PakSuzuki would have never thought of replacing the Mehran with the latest small car offering from Suzuki. Instead they would have gone for a much older discontinued model.

Because of used imports, we are also realizing our standards. Thanks to the used market and knowledge of what’s sold new around the world, we saw the demise of older discontinued models launched here as new (like the “new” Honda City) simply because people knew that it isn’t actually the newest.

For the same year, car CKD kits imports by the big three alone stood at 809 million USD. That too only for 50% of the parts because according to them they are “50% localized”. Which of them is worse for the economy?

https://propakistani.pk/2018/07/26/import-of-vehicles-and-spare-parts-increase-due-to-high-demand/

In FY 2019-2020 FBR posted a loss of 22 billion PKR during just the first seven months of that Fiscal year just because the government had stopped used car imports. Just a year before, in Fiscal year 2018-2019, the FULL year mind you, Toyota IMC paid a grand total of 5.26 billion PKR for the whole year in taxes. Even if we take the figures for the current FY when they come out, the tax paid by Toyota IMC would still be nowhere near what the tax collection figures were on the used car imports. Which of them is worse for the economy?

Look at the Wikipedia page of Toyota IMC or do a search for employee count of Suzuki or Honda, you will get figures around the 5000 or so mark.

The claims of these companies are that they have “created a lot of indirect jobs”. So have the used car industry. For decades! Please visit, bilal gunj, or Shobha or sultan ka Kooh etc. Any such markets are run strictly on the basis of imported parts for local assembled or imported cars. Everyone owes their lively hood to the imported car market. That is supporting millions of jobs.

Before the true influx of used car imports, the average car was the Mehran or Khyber. The used car imports showed the people how far behind we were and made the people demand better. Whatever small improvements the local assemblers were forced to make it was because of the imports. Hybrids were truly only brought in by the imports. Now you can find a lot of mechanics every where who can easily work on them and fix them. The imports truly introduced the need for the local mechanics to advance their skills. Which of them is worse for our economy?

Last year, the CKD and CBU import bill by the local assemblers stood at 1.8 billion USD compared to around 200 million USD for used cars imports. Yet the used cars were demonized by the local assemblers. Through their own actions and over spending on CKD and CBU, they forced the government to increase taxes to curtail the auto industry. Which of them is worse for our economy?

The number of jobs that the import industry creates and the amount of taxes that it generates, the auto industry of Pakistan will go on just fine without these desi jap exploiters. That is the basic truth they don’t want people to understand.

Please make good on your threats. Please leave….

Exactly! They know that this country is the only place where their low class business tactics can shine, and nowhere else. If they leave this country, PAMA will become jobless, and they know that very well. That is why they become panicked every time there’s talk about change.

The PA(JA)MA potentially understands very well that the industry is nothing (to boast of) with their presence either. Other nations have progressed their auto industries by bounds and leaps meanwhile these are just assemblers.

It’s funny how every “threat” to PAMA is always replied with “we will leave this industry and this country”. It’s like they are blackmailing our entire nation that our auto industry is nothing without their presence. 😒
