I can testify that it was the most buttery gearshift I’ve ever experienced. The clutch was very heavy though, it was cable-operated even though some of them came with hydraulic clutch I could have done a drop-in replacement.
Mine came with A12 but one of the previous owners had replaced it with A12A engine. It had a 4-speed gear, I kept looking in the market for that dog-leg 5-speed but couldn’t find it, though I upgraded the front wheels to disc brakes.

Its driving seat was so spacious I used to sit on a small corner of it.

One of most exhilarating points was its small turning radius.

120Y was famous for its fuel efficiency as noted in the article. Common conversion: People would buy a 74-Corolla (E30) or 80-Corolla (E70) and replace its carburettor with 120Y’s carburettor for better fuel economy. Old days, simple cars; such retrofits were quite easy.

One of the main disadvantages for the much expensive Corolla was its slanted engine (4K engine). These days you can see slanted engine in Bolan and Ravi. Whereas the Datsun vehicles came with perfectly vertically mounted engine that’s why its life was even longer than Toyota!

Datsun’s A-series engines were cast-iron pushrod OHVs. They had this slight chukka-chuk sound to them once they were slightly old, the driver would think he/she is driving an American muscle car LOL.

The car was still popular as black taxi when Uber & Careem disrupted the market. It was much spacious than 74-Corolla. In Karachi, Shahid Autos at Banaras chowk is the place where you can still find its spare parts.
