Doctor Sahib, I still don’t think you got the point. If the checks and balances and localization route worked, someone would have done something in the past 30 YEARS! In this unfortunate corrupt system of ours, this has not worked and will not work. So far, every government has failed to make any significant head way into making Pakistan a viable market for localization. Pakistan is not a good place for investments because of the government “red tape” mafia and people sitting in positions who have no clue about the auto industry or how to handle it in Pakistan. I mean, if you have some ministers arguing that the reason localization is not possible in Pakistan is because models change too frequently here or when you have other officials going to Pak Suzuki factory and praising their shoddy assembly, NOT MANUFACTURE, of a 40 year old carry dabba, you know that the people in charge are laughably ignorant and only care about their “returns”.
Please also realize a complete ban would mean even the local assemblers will not be able to make cars. Almost all major parts they use are IMPORTED. In the last year that imports were allowed FY 2017-2018, the imported cars totaled a bill of 458 Million Dollars. In the same fiscal year 2017-2018, the imports of PARTS ONLY by our local assemblers totaled a whopping 809 Million dollars. Like the man says here, in FY 2018-2019 this total for the local assemblers reached 818 Million dollars. If anyone is responsible for making the deficit bigger and worse, it’s the local assembler mafia. With the new companies/assemblers coming, this spend will top a billion dollars per year easily.
I say to hell with the local mafia. Just open up the imports. if the locals can compete, good for them. If they sink, tough!
The government must also significantly reduce the taxes so people can actually buy the cars, local or imported. If they do not, then what good are local or imported cars which the majority our population can’t afford to buy?
