Money is to be made in the disruptive modern tech which is the market sector Tesla is operating in.
Manufacturing is for 2nd tier companies/nations. Products which have been commoditized can only turn up a profit by reducing manufacturing overheads. End of the story you can earn more based on volume (economies of scale) if you are a manufacturing concern catering to the existing market segments – but you can make much more if you are the market disrupter on the bleeding edge of tech and continually creating & exploiting new market segments.
Just Toyota’s choice whether they want to be good at R&D or good at manufacturing: something the Japanese have always been doing >> innovation happens somewhere else and then Japanese companies take those products and create a durable alternative at a lower price.
