Its good to see that Toyota is finally taking advantage of its racing heritage and bringing it to the mainstream. It finally sees the potential and demand for such versions of its main line cars. The Toyota GR Yaris is selling like hot cakes.
This is something that brands in Europe have been taking advantage of for decades, prominent among which, can be the AMG versions of cars from Mercedes (AMG S55, AMG E63, AMG S63 etc.) and the M series of cars from BMW (M3 Saloon, M5 Saloon etc.) or the R series from Audi (RS 4 and RS 6).
Toyota have always been in the niche market when it comes to such modified versions of its mainstream cars; keeping them mostly in Japan or some sporadic introductions in America or Europe. Toyota TRD was/is very active in north America but mostly with SUVs. The only sedan models are the current Camry TRD or the current Avalon TRD. These models were not there before and have just been introduced in last year or so. The reason again is the sudden up-tic in the demand for such versions of its mainstream cars.
What brought this type of thinking was the success enjoyed by other brands in this segment such as Hyundai and Kia.
Hyundai has its N cars which are the fully modified versions of its street cars with not just cosmetic upgrades but also performance upgrades (Elantra N, i20 N and i30 N etc.).The Hyundai N-line cars are the more affordable versions which only mostly come with cosmetic upgrades.
The same goes for Kia. Only the names are different. Here, Kia GT cars are the fully modified versions and the GT-Line being the ones with the cosmetic changes only (Kia K5 GT / GT Line, Kia Rio GT, Kia Stinger GT etc.).
