Toyota unveiled the GR Corolla in April as the most powerful Corolla model ever to be built. Now the Japanese automaker has revealed an even more powerful limited edition GR Corolla model called Morizo Edition which will be restricted to just 200 units.
The GR Corolla Morizo Edition’s moniker comes from the nickname of Toyota president Akio Toyoda, who races under the pseudonym “Morizo” in Japan’s Super Taikyu Series. The limited model uses the GR Corolla’s Circuit Edition trim level as a starting point and creates an even more track-capable machine.
Aesthetically the front fascia of Morizo Edition gains front brake cooling ducts. The rear spoiler is smaller than the one on the Circuit Edition. Exterior colors are available in either Matte Gray or Windchill Pearl White, with carbon-fiber finished roof. Inside, the Morizo Edition’s cabin has upholstery in a mix of Brin Naub faux suede and synthetic leather in a black-and-red color combination. The rear area has two braces for extra structural support. Toyota claims there is enough space back there to fit 4 tires for a track day.
Although the Morizo Edition GR Corolla still uses the G16E-GTS 1.6L turbocharged three-cylinder engine, but it has been tuned to produce peak torque of 400Nm, which is 30Nm more than the 370Nm of standard GR Corolla Circuit Edition. The revised tuning means the peak torque is available from 3,250 to 4,600 rpm for the Morizo Edition, instead of the usual 3,000 to 5,500 rpm. The horsepower rating remains at 300 horsepower (224 kilowatts). The Morizo Edition retains the 6-speed manual gearbox, but with shorter gear ratios.
In addition, Toyota has made the Morizo Edition 48 kg lighter than the GR Corolla Circuit Edition. This has been achieved by installing light-weight bucket seats for driver & front passenger, removing the rear seats as well as rear speakers, rear window regulators, rear wiper blade and rear wiper motor. The Morizo Edition rides on 18-inch forged aluminum wheels with a 10-spoke design, rather than the regular model’s cast alloy ones. The limited edition model also uses 245/40 Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 tires instead of the usual 235/40 Pilot Sport 4.
The GR Corolla Morizo Edition will be built at Motomachi, the factory that manufactures the Lexus LC Toyota GR Yaris, as well as the flagship Toyota crown. Launching date and official prices are yet to be announced.
