Toyota is trying to do things like it was the 1990s and not 2022. Back then, this leasing gimmick would’ve been ok because EVs were not a proven tech. Now, it is; no matter what Toyota says or tries to push on its customers. This leasing strategy was Toyota making its own product fail. On the other hand, it would not be an out of bounds speculation if Toyota did this by design. Now Toyota will be able to claim that EVs are not mainstream because it put them on the market and no one bought them. This way it can “prove” EVs are not mainstream. And you can see this from the incoherent statement from the head of Toyota leasing branch:

“I don’t think we are in the kind of environment where customers who would buy the bZ4X would jump at the chance to buy it, so we have to take our time in making the effort”

What are you talking about? Given the option, People want to buy their EVs. And the only reason Your BZ4X failed was your own lack of QC. Don’t blame it on “people not wanting to buy”.
