Honda is talking a lot more sensible because they need to compete. They are fighting for market share and closing factories here and there and pulling out of markets.
Toyota on the other hands is coming from a position of abundance and acting smug just because they recently achieved their century old dream of being the #1 by sales figures in USA.

Over confidence has killed many before. Success is always temporary unless you keep doing what is required.

Sales figures are not a KPI of what is right.
More junk food sells than fruits.
More intoxicants sell than honey.
More movies and comics sell than copies of scripture.
In Pakistan the motorcycles sell more than cars, which in turn sell more than buses & trucks, which in turn sell more than bicycles.

Well Mr. Honda C.E.O., you lost Civic its market, in other words, you couldn’t manage one product, what then would you know about a large multi-level market next to Toyota, the company that changed the luxury car market?

The Honda CEO seems to be level headed guy who is thinking rationally. Hydrogen fuel cell is the way to go with hydrogen, NOT hydrogen combustion. Combustion is wasteful. The fumes from all the combustion engines seems to have impaired the thinking process of the Toyota CEO.
