As far back as the 1970s, Hydraulic Power Steering was a major bane, causing breakdowns, downtime, leaks and over all pollution. It was always either screeching (power pumps used to have that habit), leaking or dragging down the engine with its load. Always always repairs, pipes, tubes, oil top-up and dirty driveway.
Then came the Electric PS. The initial versions weren’t reliable, in fact some of them were outright unsafe such as the 8th gen Civic Si https://www.8thcivic.com/threads/electronic-power-steering.69111/, but the recent ones which perform reliably as the technology has matured are pure love. No dozens of extra parts in the engine bay, no additional pulley to wrap the serpentine around. No leaks, no screeching, better fuel economy (EPS motor only turns on when you turn the steering, power pump is always running at full RPM). Now even the designing is easier because motor engines are variable-RPM engines, and any connected loads need to be designed to perform consistently despite the variable input RPM.
