“MFR” is just another name for single-reflector/multi-reflector crystal lights designed to take an LED bulb.

Aug 2024 – finally it is confirmed that MFR means a typical crystal light (reflector housing) to take an LED bulb https://blog.betterautomotivelighting.com/we-need-to-talk-about-the-hyundai-ioniq-5-headlights

On the base-model SE Ioniq 5, it comes equipped with MFR-Type lighting. MFR stands for Multifaceted Reflector, which means the Ioniq 5 uses a mixture of LED and reflector technology. The SEL and Limited models use a straight projector-type headlight.

While the link is good, it is more of a marketing speak rather than a technical one with diagrams and examples. The way they have fancily described those early fresnel refractor lens (aka refractor lens headlight or fresnel lens headlight, in contrast to a projection lens headlight – which is 2 generations newer) I’ve a hunch that “MFR” is just another name for single-reflector/multi-reflector crystal lights designed to take an LED bulb.

I’ve reached this conclusion by thinking like this: while projection lens lights can be seen with various light sources (halogen bulbs, HID bulbs, LED bulbs and laser bulbs – hhhhh at least no tungsten filament vacuum bulb there), crystal lights have always been seen with halogen bulbs. So now they have developed a reflector-based crystal light having an LED bulb – that’s the basis of the fancy name.

Let’s wait till it arrives on the roads, then we can truly know what I understood is right or not.

Meanwhile for readers, https://carspiritpk.com/reflector-vs-projector-headlamps/ and its comments are very good to gain knowledge on headlights.

P.S: The article in the above comment is a real eye-opener which in essence means that fog-lamps are now a low-end feature. Because of advances in headlight tech, all the luxury cars since the past few decades come without fog lights. Once a standard/optional feature on high-end trims, now only those cars which lack the high tech lights need fog lamps to compensate. How times change!

according to Hyundai:

Even before the 2000s, a lens‒type headlamp with an optical pattern to refract light on a translucent headlamp cover was common. However, recently, MFR (Multi Face Reflector) headlamps using clear covers and reflectors and projection headlamps based on refractive lenses are mainly used. By using these two methods, it became possible to form a beam pattern more precisely while improving the amount of light of the lamp.

MFR LED Headlamps (Smart), Dual LED Projection Headlamps (Signature)”

What is the difference between these 2 kinds of headlight?
Signature is the upscale trim and we are by now fairly familiar with Projection lens light having LED light bulb, do we understand that MFR is just a fancy name for a low-grade technology?
