Basically the whole article and the comments are jewels, but this comment is most relevant here because it totally discusses that 55% of the petrol is consumed by 2-wheelers (statistic from 2009). The comment also discusses that the 2-wheeler-to-4-wheeler is more skewed towards 2-wheelers now as compared to 2009. So Jamali uncle’s gonna bring hybrid motorcycles and rickshaws too? Or he can impact only the <45% petrol that’s going in to 4-wheelers? Even from that 45%, a certain %age is going into generators. Or just the few % diesel that is going into SUVs from the bulk being consumed in trucks, buses and electricity gensets?

Obviously the crude petroleum import is refined to get not only petrol but also diesel, jet fuel, kerosene, HFO, etc., all of which cannot be shifted to hybrid.
Now the major problem of the country is poor grid and unreliable electricity supply. That is why lots of factories use own power generation, most of which is not very clean, e.g. using Euro2 high sulfur diesel or HFO etc. How is Jamali uncle going to cut the petroleum imports into half when most of the fuel consumed isn’t even consumed in vehicles?

He must remember that his company chose to bring in Prius (the flagship hybrid of the world) as a CBU in 2013 https://www.toyota-indus.com/prius/ and has been unable to sell even a single unit of it.

IMC wasn’t having any stomachache about ‘Make in Pakistan’, localization, GDP, petroleum imports, air pollution and emissions when 10 years ago they chose to deprive Pakistanis of the option of a decently priced locally assembled Prius as a CKD (same question also here https://carspiritpk.com/the-oligopoly-redefined/), yet now that the CUV, HEV and BEV market is maturing and is highly profitable per unit, IMC is bringing in an upscale CKD CUV? Do they think that customers cannot see through the hypocrisy that IMC is not a trend-setter but a profit-seeking fence-sitter who will conveniently jump on the CUV bandwagon now that the market is ripe?

IMC is more likely to assemble new Toyota Corolla Cross in this country before they are ready to introduce 12th gen Corolla… I thought both of these cars were based on the TNGA architecture?
The same architecture IMC was reluctant to bring to Pakistan for four years??
And even if they managed to change their minds about the platform; what’s more easier to make and sell? A new name hybrid crossover or newer model of an already pre existing well known sedan? 🤨

This person claims that 50% oil imports can be cut if all cars in the country are shifted to hybrid. I can do one better. I claim that 100% oil imports can be eliminated if all vehicles in the country are shifted to pure EV. I also claim that pure EV will be a God sent for eliminating carbon emissions generated by vehicles almost completely.

100 million for hybrids in Pakistan. Where are they? This 100 million we have been hearing for years… 12th gen Corolla and/or 12th gen Corolla hybrid; where are they? Hybrids assembly by all local desi jap companies should have happened years ago….

Production to be increased to 90000! Wow!!! Again, What good is that if the current production stands at around 80000, yet the highest ever achieved by these buggers is less than 65000. They can claim the assembly capacity of over a million if it will satisfy their bloated egos. Reality is much different and their production numbers very low.

I hope someone in the government realises this is one of the huge import bleeds that is killing the country. NOT used car imports or diapers or sauces etc.
