The PW link has more technical details.

As usual politicans being out of touch with reality, Akira Amari is welcome to increase his knowledge about electric planes. First it was Rolls Royce (British) from the above comment, and now it is the Americans who’re making electric planes. Observing the history, are Japanese just waiting for the innovation to happen elsehwere, once others have already pushed the envelope, Japanese will quickly copy the designs, use their slave labor to offer better reliability and durability than the pioneers of the tech and then laugh their way to the bank?

This poses a dilemma for potential plug-in hybrid buyers. They want to reduce their carbon footprint while retaining the ability to drive longer distances than an EV allows on a single charge. But it’s precisely long-distance driving that reduces the environmental benefits of PHEVs.

While EV technology and battery efficiency is improving every year, there are far fewer advances for Hybrids and PHEVs. As electric vehicles increasingly become the focus of auto manufacturers and as emissions standards are toughened, PHEVs could be phased out as too expensive.

The data is there alright! But the question is, are you mature enough to read it and understand it?

The problem is the vision, or lack there of, of the top management of companies. In this case the CEO of Toyota seems to be stuck in a rut. He is seeing problems where non exist.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dJAMkoiLYZY

The linked video is the struggle of how seat belts were made mandatory. All the heads of the various companies such as Ford and GM were having fits over the new regulation back then and even took it all the way to the US president, with the same rhetoric predicting doom and destruction of the auto industry if air bags were factored into the cost of the cars. yet one single government legislator persisted. airbag were made mandatory and here we are today. no damage, no industry ending. no nothing.

You see instead of common sense, these guys are geared towards thinking with greed. it a sad truth. any change that costs some money is too much for them.

This change over to EVs should be very easy for Toyota and if worked on from now, it will be a very smooth transition. others are doing it without any company shattering effect, why not Toyota? is it such a fragile company that any change will kill it? No. its just the mind set of the old CEOs of such companies that are the problem. This guy needs to go and younger guys more in touch with the times need to take the reins.

It is the same thing. airbags were demonized because it represented a change to the way the old CEOs were used to doing thing back then. this change to EV is no different. the tech is not the problem. it is the limited thinking of this Toyota CEO.

Simple. Just like in japan, Toyota is flexing its political muscles to control and influence policy. Even if someone in our government is competent enough to realize what they are doing, politically it has been made a very difficult task to go against them. They seems to have bought all the right votes.

Hydrogen is one such face and since corrupt Chinese have also been offering such tech based cars it then proves the strategy has viability. Furthermore, I am also agreed with Toyota that EVs are so-called green because energy used by them is being produced through burning of fossil fuel, which is still being used in developed economies. Moreover, countries like China still remains the most polluting country on this planet. Besides these factors I am also skeptical over environmentalists claim about EV being green, the technology is still in its infancy, the dead batteries has merely started arriving and only few plants are there for recycling them. How on earth can an infant technology be rated as green, mature data about it has not even started appearing yet. It just goes to show that people are being forced into usage of closed box type technology to appease some sinister force.
