Your argument for Volvo being ahead of the curve is like a student who is coming first in class, forcefully holding him/her self back because the rest of the class has not caught up with him/her. That is weird! If the student is coming first, they will make sure to keep it that way. If Volvo is ahead of the curve. It will make damned sure it stays there. That makes it a threat to the other companies; Because its readiness will probably ensure it a lions share of the EV market.

According to principals of subsidiary and parent, a parent must be owner of over 51% share in subsidiary and as Geely holds around only 12% or 13% stake in Volvo this figure makes Volvo an investment for Geely and not a subsidiary. For the record, one can view the list of largest shareholders in Volvo’s capital in its financial statements.
As for Volvo leaving association, well, the government is supposed to set a general goal and not the specific goal, Volvo feel ready but neither large section of public, nor other stakeholders are adaptable for using EVs by 2030 and judging by wide difference between profits of two car categories, Volvo is not as well. Moreover increase in operating income is partly due to supply of low priced raw materials from unethical Chinese and partly because of company charging premium price for its EVs. It is possible because while Geely is not a parent, it is still a large shareholder and is theoretically supposed to govern certain sections of Volvo’s operational and strategic management. Anyways, it would be interesting to see how well the EVs fare once the subsidies being offered by the governments on them are not given anymore because then the gap between initial purchase price of I.C.E. cars and EVs would widen and this widened gap would put EVs out of reach for the middle income class.
