BYD has launched the world’s largest vehicle RoRo (Roll-on/Roll-off) vessel, capable of accommodating up to 9,200 cars. Named BYD Shenzhen after the company’s hometown, the colossal carrier undocked at Yangzhou Port, approximately three hours northwest of Shanghai.
The vessel boasts impressive specifications: it measures 219 meters in length, 37.7 meters in width, and has a draft of 9 meters. With a maximum speed of 18.5 knots (34.3 km/h), it’s a key addition to BYD’s logistics capabilities.

BYD Shenzhen is the company’s fourth car carrier, with plans to expand the fleet to eight vessels by early 2026, aligning with BYD’s global growth ambitions. Known for its unparalleled vertical integration, BYD manufactures its own battery packs and cells, owns lithium mines, and even operates an EV insurance company in China. These efforts underscore BYD’s strategy to control every facet of the EV supply chain while driving its international expansion.
BYD claims that Shenzhen is the world’s most environmentally friendly car carrier. The vessel utilizes LNG dual-fuel technology, enabling it to operate on both LNG and traditional marine fuel. Additionally, it is equipped with energy-saving devices designed to enhance operational efficiency.
A standout feature of the BYD Shenzhen is the inclusion of BYD box stationary storage batteries. While specific details have not been disclosed, these batteries are likely intended to power the ship during docking or in low-emission zones, reducing fuel consumption and further minimizing its environmental impact.
The Shenzhen-based automaker introduced its first carrier, BYD Explorer, in January 2024. It was followed by BYD Changzhou, launched in December 2024, which embarked on its maiden voyage to Europe carrying 5,000 EVs. Last week, BYD introduced the BYD Hefei, a 7,000-car carrier, into operation.
The launch of BYD Shenzhen marks another milestone in BYD’s commitment to sustainable and efficient global logistics. The company is steadily expanding its fleet, with plans to have a total of 8 vehicle carriers by early 2026.
All eight carriers are designed as RoRo (roll-on/roll-off) vessels, specialized ships that transport vehicles. Vehicles are driven on and off the ship using built-in ramps located at the stern, bow, or sides, allowing for efficient loading and unloading without the need for cranes or external equipment.
BYD’s global export efforts are gaining momentum. In 2024, the company exported 417,204 EVs, a remarkable 71.9% increase compared to 2023. With 4.25 million passenger vehicles sold globally in 2024, exports accounted for approximately 10% of BYD’s total sales, highlighting its growing international footprint.
