Speaking of estates, big kudos to BMW, Mercedes and Volvo for sticking to making actual true to definition estates and station wagons! Every other company is just focusing on crossovers, but these guys are still making stunning and practical station wagons 😍🥰

Khurram, what you are describing is exactly what a crossover is. it is the step between a sedan and a full size SUV. it is supposed to give you the comfort of a car while the ride height close to that of a full size SUV.

4×4 is a characteristics of some types of what are commonly referred to as SUV. Sports/Utility Vehicles. They are for BOTH sports and are utilitarian vehicles that can be used for work. 4×4 are technically full ladder frame chassis vehicles with full 4×4 options like low range gear box etc. full old school with very heavy gearing that adds weight. that is why usually full 4x4s are not that good on road with lots of body roll.

4×4 capabilities are now a very common thing. you have it as an option on almost all JDM cars even the small 660cc ones. all cars, including your precious corolla, have it as well. the only difference is that 4×4 system is an AWD (All Wheel Drive). It is a much simpler system.

Most of the crossover SUVs that you cant seem to wrap your head around have this very common option. it simplifies things, keeps the weight low and gives the car or crossover or SUV with the system the benefits of 4×4. things like snow, mud or gravel modes or hill descend assist or hill ascend assist. And it is better because it is almost like a drive by wire system that helps/assists the driver in such situations. The old school systems, the driver had to be proficient in the use of the 4×4 gearing and all. but with AWD, even normal drivers can make use of these systems. technology innovation is a good thing.

Unfortunately, due to our tax system and uncontrolled profit margins of the local auto companies, most of the crossovers and/or SUVS here are with out the AWD.

And now with the new EV “4×4” vehicles or more accurately “all terrain vehicles” in my opinion; they just plain put the old school 4x4s to shame. they can do stuff the old guys could only dream of. just check out the new EV hummer and its crawl function to name one.

This 4×4 wording has stuck around from an era that was before AWD systems or SUVs or crossovers. just saying 4×4 meant you could understand what was being mentioned. now things are different. 4×4 capabilities are more common. they are there in cars, all the way up to larger SUVs. just saying 4×4 is not enough. if some one now says ” I have a 4×4″. do they mean a car/crossover/SUV/Kai car with AWD or a larger full size SUV with AWD or a full low gear 4×4 system? things have gotten complicated that is why we have to have specifics now. That is why a Toyota/Honda civic on stilts can now be called the “new crown cross”. 🤣 Don’t let it confuse you so much. you can get it.

Please stop doing this. You have been shown so many examples of such SUVs and crossovers from the japan automakers as well. why do you bad mouth others doing the same thing?

The sedan on stilts is a crossover.

The actual sedan, is almost the same fastback/notchback car as the crossover, but lowered.

The sports is a small crossover SUV

And the estate is a bigger SUV.
