For those who are interested, Gypsy began with the chassis code MG410, later on engine changes did happen and new chassis codes were introduced. Maruti Gypsy has its dedicated Wikipedia page (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Maruti_Suzuki_Gypsy) with all these details. For reference, Potohar is mentioned here https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Pak_Suzuki_Motors#Suzuki_Potohar.

Here is another video about Gypsy: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=UcoxkSMJW2Y from the popular YT channel Biturbo Media.

One wonders why they selected the name Gypsy “जिप्सी” (جپسی) for it. Is it because it sounds similar to “जीप सी“? Romanized as “jeep si” or in Urdu “جیپ سی”, meaning “like a Jeep/similar to Jeep”. Connecting the dots because the shape seems to be inspired by the Jeep Wrangler. If so, it was a good branding exercise.

Apparent from the Wikipedia article, Maruti Suzuki never launched the 3rd generation Jimny in India, but jumped directly to the 4th generation after a very long production run of 2nd generation (1985-2018). It is similar to Suzuki’s trend of skipping generations as seen in Indonesia and obviously in Pakistan, thoroughly discussed here: https://carspiritpk.com/suzuki-carry-minibus-in-indonesia/#comment-7589 and in other article related to Mehran, Bolan and Ravi.

the latest Suzuki Jimny 5-door was recently introduced as well

Oh, it was covered on CSPK blog here: https://carspiritpk.com/maruti-suzuki-unveils-fronx-and-jimny-suvs-at-auto-expo-2023/, https://carspiritpk.com/maruti-suzuki-fronx-and-jimny-to-be-exported-to-australia/
Wish PakSuzuki introduces the 5-door Jimny as a CKD here. There is a lot of demand for a small SUV around.

thanks for the correction, (the word Mehran was incorrectly put and has been removed).. As far as Samurai is concerned afaik it was available in 1.0L as well as 1.3L versions but was only available in a shorter wheelbase version.

This sentence leaves a question dangling. If the Pak Suzuki’s Potohar was a Samurai with an F10A engine, what did the Santana Motors original offering for Spanish market come with?

Quote:- “The fuel ignition system was a traditional distributor with breaker points. The replacement of the factory distributor with the one that came with the locally made Suzuki Alto (Mehran) was a common aftermarket upgrade.” -endquote

Please check the accuracy of this. F10A engine came in the SJ410 Potohar as well as RA410 5th gen Alto (2000-2012). The Potohar came with contact-point distributor but the Alto came with CDI distributor. It was logically possible to fit an Alto’s distributor in Potohar, but as far as SB308 Mehran (2nd gen Alto 1989-2019) is concerned, it came with a 3-cylinder F8B engine with a contact-point distributor throughout. The 3 cylinder F8B distributor cannot supply current to all the cylinders of the 4-cylinder F10A engine. I think you just need a small edit, from the bracket, remove Mehran and write 2000-2012 RA410 Alto 5th gen.

Quote:- “…the new third-generation Jimny with an M13A engine was introduced as a CBU import model but with a higher price tag…” -endquote

Later on, the CBU 3rd gen was discontinued (by PakSuzuki) and CBU 4th gen Jimny launched (in Pakistan) in 2019, and it was covered very well on CSPK:

https://carspiritpk.com/pak-suzuki-to-launch-jimny-at-pkr-38-9-lac/
https://carspiritpk.com/pak-suzuki-increases-jimny-prices/
https://carspiritpk.com/pak-suzuki-removes-cbu-lineup-from-its-website/

The 4th gen was discontinued in Jan 2023, as seen from above article.

I remember one Potohar from our project. It was so capable in mud that 4WD was never even needed. It could make its way on 2WD easily.

It is still in use, and still produced for special order for the army. It’s spiritual successor, the latest Suzuki Jimny 5-door was recently introduced as well 🙂
