Toyota has launched the 12th generation Corolla range for the Japanese Domestic Market (JDM). The 2019 JDM Corolla is available in three body styles– Sedan, Touring (previously Fielder/ Axio) and the Sport hatchback.
The 12th gen Corolla carries a mix of fascias offered in different markets across the globe. In this case, both Corolla and Corolla Touring share the same front end as the Levin sold in China, whereas the Corolla Sport looks identical to hatchback versions found in the US and Europe.
As always, the JDM Corolla models feature a stylized “C” badge up front instead of a regular Toyota logo. Furthermore, to comply with Japanese regulations, the JDM versions of the Corolla sedan and wagon have different dimensions from their international counterparts. The Corolla sedan measures 4,495 mm long, 1,745 mm wide, 1,435 mm tall and with a 2,640 mm wheelbase. When compared to international Corolla models, the JDM sedan is 135 mm shorter in length, 35 mm shorter in width and sits on a 60 mm shorter wheelbase.
The Corolla Touring shares almost same dimensions as that of its sedan sibling, although it stands slightly taller at 1,460 mm. Compared to overseas models, the JDM Corolla Touring is 155 mm shorter in length, 45 mm shorter in width and has a 60 mm shorter wheelbase like the sedan. The Sport hatchback however carries the exact same dimensions as the international-spec models.
Engine options include a 2ZR-FAE 1.8 liter naturally-aspirated 4-cylinder petrol unit developing 140 hp and 170 Nm, mated to a Super CVT-i with 7 virtual speeds powering the front wheels. This powertrain is available only for the Corolla and Corolla Touring.
Then there is the 8NR-FTS 1.2 liter turbocharged 4-cylinder engine producing 116 hp and 185 Nm, paired with either a Super CVT-i with 10 virtual speeds or a 6-speed Intelligent Manual Transmission (iMT). This engine is available with the entire range with front-wheel drive and manual transmission, however only the Corolla Sport comes with the CVT in both front- and all-wheel drive configurations.
Toyota also offers a hybrid powertrain based on the Atkison-cycle 2ZR-FXE 1.8 liter four-cylinder engine churning out 98 hp and 142 Nm, with a 53 hp/163 Nm electric motor and 6.5 Ah nickel-metal hydride battery. It gets an e-CVT transmission, with front-wheel drive available for all body styles, while all-wheel drive (E-Four) is limited to the Corolla and Corolla Touring.
