2023 Subaru Rex Launched in Japan

Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky were the two sister products launched in Japan in late 2019. Now the subcompact crossovers have just welcomed a new member in the family, the Subaru Rex. Not to mention there is Perodua Ativa too, which is sold in Malaysian market is essentially the same vehicle.

While Toyota Raize and Daihatsu Rocky are aesthetically a bit different, the Subaru Rex in fact looks like a rebadged Daihatsu Rocky. The only difference being the Subaru emblems inside & out, and a slightly tweaked grille that wears different indents.

The Subaru Rex comes in two variants, G and Z. Both variants are front-wheel drive, powered by a WA-VE 1.2L naturally-aspirated three-cylinder petrol engine good for 86 hp and 113 Nm & comes paired to a CVT gearbox. The fuel consumption is rated at 20.7 km/l as per WLTC test cycle.

In terms of equipment, the Subaru Rex gets LED headlamps, LED fog lamps, fabric upholstery with red contrast piping, while variant specific features see the G version getting 16 inch wheels, a manual handbrake, a urethane steering wheel, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster. The Z variant has 17-inch wheels, electronic parking brake, leather-wrapper steering wheel and 9-inch touchscreen head unit with Android Auto and Apple CarPlay.

The safety and driver assistance systems are part of the Smart Assist suite, with Subaru opting against using its own EyeSight branding. Features include a blind spot monitor, autonomous emergency braking, traffic sign recognition, high beam assist, adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, lane departure warning, road departure warning and rear cross traffic alert, with a panoramic view monitor and parking assist being optional.

The 2023 Subaru Rex in Japan is priced from 1.82 million yen (PKR 27.82 lac) for the G variant to 2.171 million yen (PKR 33.19 lac) for the top-spec Z variant.
