The all new Mazda3 is making waves ever since it made its debut last year. Having already won plenty of prestigious international automotive awards, the new Mazda3 has now been crowned with the 2020 World Car Award under Best Car Design of the Year category.
The Mazda3 is the second to be named World Car Design of the Year, following the MX-5 winning the award for Mazda in 2016. Introduced in 2010, Mazda’s unique Kodo design philosophy and its ability to breathe vitality into a car has been the driving force behind the multiple award-winning styling of the current Mazda range.
Taking inspiration from Japanese aesthetics, Mazda adopted a “less is more” approach when designing the Mazda3 and stripped away superfluous elements from the car’s form. The result is a unique design that creates subtle undulations of light and shadows gliding over the car’s smooth body, giving birth to a natural and powerful expression of vitality. Furthermore, despite sharing the same model name, the hatchback and sedan models have distinct personalities—the design of the hatchback is emotive, the sedan elegant.
Commenting on the Mazda3’s World Car Design of the Year Award achievement, Mazda Managing Director for UK, Jeremy Thomson, said:
“It’s fantastic that the Mazda3 has won such an acclaimed global design award and it’s testament to the work of Mazda’s designers that the Mazda3 can win acclaim for its styling against super tough opposition from across every sector in the industry. In the Mazda3 we simply have one of the best-looking family cars in the world, and this award cements that achievement.”
According to Mazda which has marked its 100 years of existence this year:
“We have always built cars that provide driving pleasure with the aim to brighten people’s lives in any era. Following on for the next century, we will continue to take on challenges to create unique products, designs, technologies and customer experiences, hoping to offer something special that our car-loving customers will want to treasure and hold onto for as long as possible.”
