Chery Unveils QQ Ice Cream

Chery has released first official images of its new mini electric vehicle (EV) called QQ Ice Cream. The vehicle will compete against the likes of super-cheap Wuling Hongguang Mini which is currently the highest selling EV in China.

The QQ Ice Cream is the first car to appear in Chery’s iCar Ecology sub-division and according to the official documents, measures just 2,980 mm long, 1,496 mm wide and 1,637 mm tall, but with a wheelbase that spans 1,960 mm. For the sake of comparison its almost a foot & a half shorter than the 660cc Suzuki Alto we have here which measures 3,395mm in length. The QQ Ice Cream will weigh around 700 kg, making it extremely light too.

The design seems a bit up-market compared to the Hongguang Mini with headlamps featuring U-shaped DRL signature, while the lower intake in the apron blends into wide-width trim piece in black with vertical segments and circular sections for fog lamps. Towards the sides, distinct creases can be seen on the fenders and doors, accompanied by a raised window line near the rearmost pillars.

The rear also features similar treatment as the front with U shaped LED lights and circular reflector elements on the bumper. The Ice Cream also features a dual-tone paint scheme, with a black upper part paired with no less than 7 body colors available. The wheels are 12-inch units wrapped with 145/70 tires.

Due to a greater wheelbase to length ratio, the Ice Cream can accommodate 4 passengers inside with ease, and to ensure there is ample space, the overall design is completely boxy. Although interior images haven’t been revealed at this stage, as per reports the Ice Cream’s interior will be more stylish than the rival Hongguang Mini EV. It will get a dual-layer dashboard with a digital instrument cluster and free-standing touchscreen infotainment system, a two-spoke, multi-function steering wheel and will offer premium-looking materials.

The QQ Ice Cream will be powered by a rear electric motor that provides 26.8 hp (20 kW) and 85 Nm of torque, good for a top speed of 100 km/h. The e-motor draws power from a lithium iron phosphate battery that provides up to 170 km of driving range. In comparison, the Wuling Mini EV has 17.4 hp (13 kW) and 85 Nm, with a range of up to 170 km as well. As per sources the Chery QQ Ice Cream is expected to be priced from 30,000 yuan (PKR 7.7 lac).

The vehicle was intended to cash in the EV policy but is yet to make an official appearance in Pakistan, though MG is on the verge of launching the much expensive HS plug-in hybrid which cost nearly PKR 8 million.
