FBR Faces Backlash for Procuring 1,010 Honda City Cars Worth Rs 6 Billion

The Federal Board of Revenue (FBR) is facing widespread public criticism for its decision to purchase 1,010 brand-new Honda City 1.2L CVT cars at an estimated cost of Rs 6 billion.

As per media reports, a notification issued on January 10, 2025, confirmed the issuance of a Letter of Intent to Honda Atlas Cars (Pakistan) Limited for the procurement, triggering a wave of backlash on social media.

The procurement will take place in two phases: an upfront payment of Rs3 billion will cover 500 vehicles, with the remaining 510 units partially funded. Deliveries are set to begin this month, with 75 cars arriving in January, 200 in February, and the remainder spread out through May 2025.

The vehicles, according to the notification, will feature navigation systems with reverse cameras, premium interiors, free periodic maintenance for up to 20,000 km or 12 months, a 4-year extended warranty, FBR branding on the doors and windscreen, and tracking systems with a one-year service plan.

The announcement has sparked outrage online, with many criticizing the move amid ongoing economic struggles and increasing tax burdens, particularly on salaried citizens. However, FBR officials have defended the decision, arguing that the new vehicles are essential to improve operational efficiency. The cars will reportedly be used for official duties, including tax collection activities.
