Proton S70 Sedan Enters Production in Malaysia

Malaysian automaker Proton has officially started production of its latest sedan, the S70 which was spotted undisguised during filming of its TVC last month. Bookings of the Geely Emgrand-based sedan are also open in Malaysia and customers can place an order against RM500 (PKR 29,460) starting from November 1, 2023.

The Proton S70 will be available in four variants – 1.5T Executive, 1.5T Premium, 1.5T Flagship, and 1.5T Flagship X. Although the car shares its underpinning with the Proton X50 (Geely Binyue), it is positioned as a C-segment offering hence the 70 suffix in its name.

In terms of dimensions, the S70 measures 4,638 mm long, 1,822 mm wide, and 1,460 mm tall making it even longer, wider, and taller than the 12th gen Toyota Corolla, however, its 2,650 mm wheelbase is a tad shorter than 2,700 mm of Corolla.

As for appearance, the S70 is largely similar to its donor Geely Emgrand apart from mild cosmetic differences such as a redesigned grille upfront, and Proton lettering at the back. Inside the changes include a large floating touchscreen sitting atop the dashboard and a different steering wheel than the one offered in Emgrand, the rest of the cabin remains true to its donor model.

Proton hasn’t provided full specifications yet, other than stating that the sedan will have a 1.5L turbocharged engine and a dual-clutch transmission. Perhaps the S70 will get the same 1.5L turbocharged three-cylinder turbo unit that comes deployed with the X70, which serves up 175 hp and 255 Nm and comes paired with a 7-speed DCT gearbox.
