After almost 16 years, the Maruti Alto has been dethroned from its position as the best-selling car in India and the car that has unseated Alto from this title is none other than Maruti’s own Suzuki Swift.

Swift sold 1,72,671 units in the financial year 2020-21 compared to the previous fiscal year 2019-20, bear in mind financial year in India starts from April each year. Alto on the other hand, sold 1,58,992 units during FY20-21.
Earlier this year, the Swift which is in its latest generation in India surpassed 2.3-million-unit sales milestone in Indian market. First introduced in 2005, the Swift sells at a yearly average of over 143,750 units in India.

The latest generation of Swift was introduced in India in February 2018. It then set a record of selling 100,000 units in just 145 days of its launch and went on to surpass 200,000 units sales milestone within 350 days. It was also crowned with the Indian Car of the Year award for year 2019.
The Swift for the Indian market comes powered by a 1.2-liter K12M 4-cylinder petrol engine that comes paired to either a 5-speed manual or a 5-speed automatic (AGS) gearbox. The engine is equipped with idle start stop (ISS) technology resulting in a high fuel efficiency of 23.2 km in a liter for manual and 23.76 km per liter with AGS variants.

Earlier this year, the 4th gen Swift facelift was also introduced in India featuring slight visual enhancements, equipment upgrades and new engine. It is priced from INR 5.73 lac (PKR 11.79 lac) for the base LXi variant and goes as high as INR 8.41 lac (PKR 17.3 lac) for the ZXi Plus AMT version.
