Toyota has temporarily stopped taking bookings for its newly announced Hilux pickup truck in India which was unveiled on 20th January 2022. The ongoing global chip shortage is said to be the main reason behind this move. According to Toyota India, they have received overwhelming response for new Hilux from buyers in India. According to a company official:
“In light of various factors impacting our supply, we are unable to meet the heightened demand. Thus, we deeply regret our temporary halt of bookings for the Hilux with a view to avoid any further inconvenience to our customers.”
Toyota started the pre-bookings for the Hilux against INR 100,000 at the authorized dealers and INR 50,000 for the online-buyers. The company says the bookings will resume at soonest when possible. As per the official statement:
“We will continue our best efforts to resume Toyota Hilux bookings at the soonest possible opportunity, with our aim to provide the best customer experience.”
This happens where government regulations are strict enough to make any automaker no matter how large it is, to abide to the ethical business practices. Unfortunately in Pakistan, any company can collect whatever number of bookings even if its not ready to deliver the vehicles, and can make its customers wait for even more than a year while transferring all the price impacts on to the customers. Government must take action in the interest of consumers to make sure no price impact should be made applicable to those customers who have made full payments & waiting to get the deliveries. The automakers must also be heavily penalized if they are unable to deliver the units but are still collecting new bookings from customers.
