2/3 for BYD in the 2023 Japan EV of the Year Award

Chinese automaker BYD has won 2 out of the 3 podium positions in the 2023 Japan EV of the Year awards. BYD Dolphin with 241 points was declared the EV of the Year in Japan followed by the South Korean Hyundai Kona in the second place with 151 points, and BYD Atto 3 in the third place with a score of 145.

Voting for the 2023 edition of the Japan EV of the Year awards was carried out from December 3, 2023, to January 31 this year, where individuals took part in online voting, with each individual given up to three models to vote for. Added to these were 27 media outlet representatives as well as key figures from EV-related companies. Hosted by consulting firm Enechange, the 2023 Japan EV of the Year award is the event’s second edition, its inaugural running held in 2022, and was won by Nissan Sakura EV.

According to the jury, the BYD Dolphin is well-equipped with advanced driving assistance features, and earned high praise for its cost-effectiveness. Additionally, it has been praised for its thoughtful localization tailored to the Japanese market, such as lowering the vehicle height from 1,570mm to 1,550mm for easier parking in Japanese multi-story parking lots.

The runner-up Hyundai Kona EV was praised by consumers & journalists alike for its well-designed interior space, and its evolution both as a car and as an EV, particularly for its driving performance and comfort. Lastly, the BYD Atto 3 was appreciated for its impressive equipment and cost-effectiveness.

Japan EV of the Year is a project aimed at selecting attractive electric vehicles that society demands, intending to realize a sustainable society through the proliferation of EV charging ports. It is jointly organized by Enechange, which aims to promote the spread of EVs, and EVsmart, a media platform that has been disseminating electric vehicle information since its inception. The voting is conducted by evangelists who disseminate information about electric vehicles mainly through web media, as well as by members of the general public. The concept is to “choose and support electric vehicles together.”
