2 Tata Cars Get 5 Stars in Inaugural Bharat NCAP Crash Tests

After undergoing crash testing under India’s new independent safety performance evaluation, the Bharat New Car Assessment Program (Bharat-NCAP), Tata Motors’ domestically produced SUVs— the Tata Safari and Tata Harrier, have been awarded the highest 5-star ratings. These two vehicles are the first in the new system to earn the highest ratings for both adult and child occupant protection.

India is now among the very few countries to have its own independent crash-testing evaluation body. Indian Union minister for road transport and highways, Nitin Gadkari lauded Tata Motors for the feat. The minister said:

“Bharat-NCAP is India’s independent, atmanirbhar (self-reliance) voice on vehicle safety. It is benchmarked to the best-in-class global standards and the Bharat-NCAP vehicle rating system is designed to advance road safety and vehicle safety standards beyond mandatory regulations, I’m delighted that the first-ever vehicles being certified today with the highest achievable 5-star rating, are both from Tata Motors. I congratulate them on the award of this coveted certification with the highest possible ratings and for continuing to enrich their legacy of introducing the safest vehicles on Indian roads.”

Earlier this week, Bharat-NCAP declared that it would make public the safety ratings for the first set of cars it has assessed since its founding. The testing organization was founded earlier this year to evaluate the safety of automobiles built in India. These tests were carried out earlier this month by it. Bharat NCAP shared the results on X (formerly Twitter).

Commenting on the results, Shailesh Chandra, MD, Tata Motors Passenger Vehicles and Tata Passenger Electric Mobility said:

“Bharat NCAP is a significant step forward as it provides customers with a credible, objective score to evaluate the safety aspects of various vehicles. Informed customers taking optimal decisions will further foster the rising preference for safer vehicles in the country.”
