Prius Prime Becomes the Most Energy Efficient EV in USA

Last week, final EPA fuel-efficiency results were released for the 2017 Toyota Prius Prime plug-in hybrid. When running in all-electric mode, that car is now the most energy-efficient vehicle available in the United States.

The all-new 2017 Prius Prime plug-in hybrid electric vehicle has topped every battery-electric automobile in America with an estimated 133 MPGe (Miles Per Gallon Equivalent), the Prius is ahead by a country mile. Before now, BMW i3 electric car with 124 MPGe was the undisputed efficiency leader in the United States since its launch as a 2014 model.

Miles Per Gallon Equivalent, or MPGe, is a measure of how far a car can travel electrically on the same amount of energy as contained in 1 gallon of gasoline.

Prius Prime - the Most Energy Efficient EV in USA

For the sake of comparison, Tesla Model S, the $70K battery-electric luxury car many see as the best EV on the US market is about 33% less efficient than the Prius Prime with just an 89 MPGe rating. The all-electric Nissan Leaf though much better than the Tesla S, is not even close to the Prius Prime in energy efficiency with 114 MPGe rating.

The BMW i3 BEV with a rating of 124 MPGe is the closest rival to the Prius Prime. It has a total range of 81 miles and has a price tag roughly double that of the Toyota Prius Prime.

There are also two other considerations that make the new Prius Prime a standout. One is the price. It is one of the cheapest electric vehicles on the American market. Second is its range. With about 25 miles of EV range and a total range of 640 miles between fill-ups, the Prius Prime is quite hard to beat.
