As of the end of December 2024, China’s new energy vehicle (NEV) ownership reached 31.4 million units, surpassing the 30 million milestone and representing 8.9% of the country’s total vehicle ownership of 353 million, according to data released by the Chinese Ministry of Public Security (MPS).
In China, new energy vehicles (NEVs) include battery electric vehicles (BEVs), plug-in hybrid vehicles (PHEVs), and fuel cell vehicles (FCVs). However, hybrid electric vehicles (HEVs) are not classified as NEVs.
China’s NEV ownership surpassed the 10 million milestone for the first time at the end of June 2022 and exceeded 20 million at the end of 2023.
Breaking down the data, the ownership of BEVs in China as of the end of December, stood at 22.09 million units, accounting for 70.34% of the total number of NEVs.
As per the MPS data, in 2024, China registered 26.9 million new vehicles, marking a 9.53% increase compared to 2023. Currently, 96 Chinese cities have over 1 million vehicles, 45 cities exceed 2 million, and 26 cities surpass 3 million. Six major cities — Chengdu, Beijing, Chongqing, Suzhou, Shanghai, and Zhengzhou — each have over 5 million vehicles.
By the end of December, the total number of motor vehicle drivers in China, including motorcycle drivers, reached 542 million. Among them, 506 million were automobile drivers, making up 93.46% of the total driver population. In 2024, the number of new drivers licensed in China was 22.26 million.
