GWM Launches Haval H7 (Big Dog) in South Africa — Is Pakistan the Next Stop?

Great Wall Motor (GWM) is set to launch the Haval H7 in the South African market on January 15, 2025. Unlike the domestic Chinese Haval H7, this version is a rebranded model of the second-generation Haval Big Dog, tailored specifically for international markets and poised for gradual expansion worldwide.

The Haval H7 closely resembles its Chinese domestic counterpart in design. Its front features distinctive round headlights and a polygonal grille adorned with dot-matrix chrome elements, with the “HAVAL” logo prominently displayed at the center. The SUV rides on multi-spoke rims, complemented by rivet accents on the wheel arches, while the roof is equipped with a functional luggage rack, enhancing its rugged appeal.

The Haval H7 is expected to feature a 1.5T or 2.0T gasoline engine, along with a 1.5T plug-in hybrid (PHEV) system, though official power specifications have yet to be announced. For reference, the domestic PHEV variant uses GWM’s Hi4 plug-in hybrid system, combining a 1.5T engine with dual electric motors and a 2-speed DHT. The engine delivers either 123 kW/243 Nm or 113 kW/233 Nm, depending on the trim, while the motors output 130 kW/300 Nm or 220 kW/510 Nm. Meanwhile, the domestic gasoline variant is powered by a 1.5T engine producing 135 kW/275 Nm or a 2.0T engine delivering 175 kW/385 Nm, paired with 7DCT or 9DCT transmissions, respectively.

South Africa is one of the key right-hand drive (RHD) markets globally, and it often serves as a precursor for car launches in Pakistan, particularly for Chinese automakers. Historically, models such as the FAW Sirius and V2, BAIC BJ40, Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, and Tiggo 8 Pro were introduced in Pakistan either simultaneously or shortly after their South African debuts, showcasing a clear pattern in launch strategies.

The same was evident in GWM’s case with Haval H6 and Jolion, their Pakistani debut was subsequent to their South African introduction. Even the GWM Tank was released in South Africa just before it was brought to Pakistan. Given this pattern, it’s reasonable to anticipate that GWM might introduce the Haval H7 (Big Dog) in Pakistan following its South African debut.
