The Sonet was first previewed as a concept at the 2020 Auto Expo, held earlier this year in February. Since then, the compact SUV has created quite a buzz, making it one of the most anticipated cars of 2020. Kia also broke all the records of single-day bookings in India with more than 6,500 Sonet units getting booked in a day.
There are 3 engine options available with the new Sonet in India. There is a 1.2-liter petrol unit capable to deliver 82hp & 115Nm & comes paired to 5-speed manual transmission. Then there is a 1.0-liter GDi turbo good for 118hp & 172Nm paired to either 6-speed iMT or 7-speed DCT. Lastly there is a 1.5-liter diesel unit which churns out up to 113hp and 250Nm & comes paired to either 6-speed manual or 6-speed automatic gearbox.
Key features include a 4.25-inch instrument cluster, a 10.25-inch touchscreen infotainment system with Apple CarPlay, Android Auto and Kia’s UVO connected technology, ventilated front seats, wireless phone charging, flat-bottomed multi-function steering wheel, rear AC vents, air-purifier, electric sunroof and much more.
In terms of safety, standard equipment includes 6 airbags, ABS with EBD with Brake Assist, traction control, Electronic Stability Control, Vehicle Stability Management, Hill-Start Assist, automatic headlamps, ISOFIX child seat anchors and a host of other features. The all new Kia Sonet will compete against the likes of the Ford EcoSport, Maruti Vitara Brezza, Tata Nexon, Hyundai Venue and Mahindra XUV300 in the highly competitive Indian market.
Kia in Pakistan is in works to launch 4 more vehicles before June 2021, three of which are likely going to be SUVs. Whether Sonet is in that list or not, we will have to wait to find out.
