Kia is really going hard at this electrification game. It held the first Kia EV Day and launched a new production model, the Kia EV5 alongside displaying two of its familiar models the multiple award-winning EV6 and flagship EV9. The South Korean automaker also showcased two new concept cars, the EV3 and EV4.
These new products are part of an ambitious plan that will add 15 new electric vehicles to Kia’s portfolio by 2027. They will be all-electric, and not a blend of EVs and PHEVs. More intriguing is the fact Kia announced these new models will earn go-faster GT variants — such as the EV6 GT.
Kia says it is keen to broaden the appeal of electric cars for drivers with lower budgets, hence the EV3 will take on the benefits of the flagship EV9 model in a compact SUV form. It’s too early for any powertrain or performance details, but from the initial images, it’s clear that – if it goes into production – the EV3 will be to the EV9 what the Evoque is to the Range Rover.
On the other hand, the EV4 concept is a blend of a sedan, an elongated hatchback, and a crossover. While the EV4’s silhouette is unlike anything we’ve seen, there are a few influences we can see making their way down from the EV6, such as the long, sloping nose, a heavily raked windshield, and a sloping rear glass that terminates at the integrated spoiler.
Inside, there is a relatively clean cabin layout that keeps things feeling nice and spacious. The majority of the components are hidden, in this case literally because the climate controls retract when not in use. Only one binnacle rises from the dashboard. The pin-style air vents, which are also seen on the EV3, offer a novel approach to a sometimes overlooked area of the automobile by using separate jets to modify the airflow.
This being a concept, Kia didn’t bring any sort of powertrain specs along for the ride, but we don’t expect the EV3 and EV4 to stay in the conceptual realm for long. According to Ho-sung Song, President and CEO of Kia Motors:
“Kia is keenly focused on providing solutions to the concerns that continue to cause hesitation when it comes to making an EV purchase. We will meet customer expectations by offering a full line-up of EVs at various price points and improving charging infrastructure availability. As a sustainable mobility solutions provider, Kia’s transition to electric vehicles is a must, not an option. By developing advanced EV technology, bold design, and intuitive services, and applying them to our entire EV line-up, our ultimate aim is to provide Kia’s unique value to as many people as possible. The acceleration towards electrification begins now.”
