Should Sazgar Launch the BAIC X55 in Pakistan?

Sazgar Auto has witnessed remarkable success with its venture with GWM (Great Wall Motors) as the company has introduced a range of locally assembled vehicles from the Haval sub-brand, as well as CBU imported models from the Ora and Tank series of vehicles.

However, Sazgar’s other venture with BAIC hasn’t paid off well. Its lone offering, the BJ40 Plus SUV struggles to leave the showroom floors whereas other potential offerings that were supposed to be introduced including the X25 crossover and D20 sedan & hatchback just got lost in the dark.

Though a new model of BAIC BJ40 Plus debuted last year, it seems highly unlikely for Sazgar to bring a newer generation model here considering the price as well as the reception the current model has received in our market. Better still, BAIC already has a viable contender in its global portfolio that has all the bells and whistles needed to succeed here. Additionally, the product has already made its way into RHD markets, including South Africa, so it makes more sense for the company to bring this one here.

Meet the new BAIC X55 (also known as Beijing X6 in some markets), the compact crossover SUV with stunningly impressive looks. Underpinned by the BMFA (Beijing modular functional architecture) platform, the BAIC X55 is powered by a 1.5L turbocharged four-cylinder engine that puts out a healthy 185 hp of power and 305 Nm of torque and comes paired with a 7-speed wet dual-clutch transmission that drives the front wheels.

Sazgar’s least-priced locally assembled offering in Pakistan is the Haval Jolion which costs PKR 80.29 lac, while the BAIC BJ40 Plus is rather unwanted at PKR 119.95 lac. The new BAIC X55 crossover can be pitted against the likes of Peugeot 2008, MG HS Excite & Chery Tiggo 4 Pro, and with a price tag of around PKR 65-70 lac will become a very impressive option that can even dent the sales of lower variants of Hyundai Tucson and Kia Sportage.

From the looks of it, the BAIC X55 appears quite a capable product and is currently making inroads in various key markets across the globe. The question is, whether Sazgar will do something to bring this car here. Since everything Sazgar touches these days turns to gold, we can only hope that the BAIC X55 is introduced in all its glory here. Don’t forget to share your thoughts in the comment section below.
