The next-generation Toyota Yaris for international markets has been spotted testing for the first time ahead of a likely 2020 launch. The new Yaris is being tested on the Nurburgring race circuit in Germany.

In April earlier this year, the US-spec Toyota Yaris made its debut at the New York Motor Show, which is essentially a rebadged Mazda2. While several automakers have abandoned subcompact cars as consumers are now more inclined towards SUVs and crossovers, Toyota continues to show its confidence. However in order to reduce costs, the company is relying more heavily on its partnership with Mazda.

Although the camouflaged test mule appears to remain largely similar to the US-spec version, especially if you notice window shape, roofline and boot lid that closely resemble the Mazda2. However lights, bumpers and grille seem to be different, which may be a result of different crash regulations in the US and Europe, or different styling tastes.

The new Yaris range is expected to receive hybrid powertrain as well. The current Yaris is available with two petrol engines: a 1.0-liter three-cylinder and a 1.5-liter four-cylinder naturally aspirated engine. However there are reports that Corolla’s 1.2-liter turbocharged engine could also act as a replacement of both these engines.

Another prototype with a different camo and wheel design was spotted at the track the same time, suggesting that Toyota is testing two different chassis set-ups. The one in the red camo is likely a GR Sport variant, Toyota’s new trim designation for models with a sportier tune to bridge the gap between mainstream variants and the flagship GRMN versions.
