Volkswagen’s firs electric vehicle– the ID.3 was just awarded a 5-star rating in the latest round of Euro-NCAP crash tests.
Since VW passenger cars don’t exist here in our market, many might find this post irrelevant but in a country where most local assembled vehicles still come out without a single airbag on offer, this post will help our people realize where the world has reached in terms of vehicle, occupant & pedestrian safety and where do we stand. By ‘we’, I am actually referring to the local auto industry.
The ID.3 electric hatchback scored 87% points for drivers and passengers, 89% for child protection & got full marks for frontal and lateral impact in the test. Safety systems were also tested as all variants of ID.3 get AEB (Autonomous Emergency Braking) with pedestrians and cyclists detection, as well as lane keep assist as standard. Volkswagen ID.3 is available with 3 battery sizes– 45 kWh, 58 kWh and 77 kWh offering a range of 330 km, 420 km and 550 km respectively (WLTP test cycle). Wheels are propelled by a rear-mounted electric motor, generating 203 hp of power and 310 Nm of torque.
Majority of us are inured to seeing pitifully built cars crumple like paper in event of a collision with no structural integrity whatsoever. In this day & age, in absence of sophisticated automotive policies, local assembled cars such as Suzuki Swift, Alto VX, WagonR VXR/ VXL, Honda City, United Bravo, Prince Pearl etc in our market come without a single airbag on offer, forget about everything else. How long will it take our local auto industry to reach a competitive level is yet unknown at this stage; however what we do know is that the local auto industry is always ready to shiver against 10-years old used JDMs.
