BYD, the world’s largest electric vehicle maker, launched 3 pure EV models in Indonesia as it seeks to expand its presence in Southeast Asia’s biggest economy. The three electric models are the Dolphin hatchback, Seal sedan, and Atto 3 crossover.
Having outsold Tesla in terms of pure EV sales in Q4, 2023, and with over 3.02 million cars sold globally in 2023, BYD has already started to make an impact in the Southeast Asian markets by outperforming other automakers in EV sales, driven by strong sales of high-quality affordable models.

Indonesia seeks to accelerate EV adoption and lure investment into local battery production and EV supply chains that can take advantage of the country’s rich nickel reserves, a key battery material. At the launch event, Indonesia’s Chief Economic Minister Airlangga Hartarto said that BYD was planning to invest $1.3 billion in facilities with a production capacity of 150,000 vehicles. The minister indicated that his government is considering eliminating import tariffs and value-added tax for businesses investing in local EV factories.
