Dongfeng Mengshi M-Terrain Electric SUV Exposed in Spy Shots

Chinese automaker Dongfeng unveiled its premium electric off-road brand called M Hero in August 2022, while showcasing two electric concept vehicles, the M-Terrain and M-Terrain S. The M in the name is the initial of its Chinese brand name (Mengshi) and also stands for the brand’s military vehicle DNA.

Now for the first time, spy photos of Mengshi’s pure electric SUV were exposed on the internet. The camouflaged test mules were captured undergoing extensive testing ahead of their formal launch expected to take place somewhere during the first half of 2023 in China.

According to Chinese motoring media, the M-Terrain electric SUV will have 80% of its styling retained from the Mengshi M-Terrain concept that was previewed in August. The spy images affirms this to a great level. The M-Terrain SUV will adopt a wide-body design with rigid lines to portray a muscular look. According to reports, the M-Terrain will have air suspensions that can lift the vehicle to 150mm and achieve a higher water-wading ability.

The spy images also show various sensors equipment on the front windshield, confirming that the M-Terrain SUV will feature driving assisting systems. The previous press conference of the brand confirmed that it would have an L3 autonomous driving assistance system that will support adaptive cruise control, lane keep assist, and many others. The vehicle will also feature support for reverse charging, valet parking, crab mode, and other technologies.

Dongfeng is yet to share technical details of the M-Terrain SUV however, according to Chinese media it will comprise of EV and EREV versions. The first one features a power output of 800 kW (1,070 hp), a 140-kWh battery, and a 500-km drive range with 0-100km/h acceleration of around 4.2 seconds. The EREV version will have 600 kW (816 hp) of power and have a 65.88-kWh battery good for 800 km of range (with range extender on).

The power figures are more than enough for off-road scenarios such as slopes and dune bashing. Dongfeng will build the cars using M-Tech smart off-road architecture and the MORA platform that also boasts a special tech that enables its vehicles to have a turning radius of just 5.1 m.

Positioned as a pure electric luxury SUV with genuine off-road capabilities, the M-terrain is expected to be priced around 600,000 to 700,000 yuan ($86,100 to $100,500 USD).
