The new GWM Tank 500 SUV has been formally approved for sale in Australia by the federal government ahead of its expected launch in the first quarter of 2024.
Known as a rival of the Toyota Land Cruiser Prado, the Tank 500 measures 5,078mm long, 1,934mm wide, and 1,905mm tall, with a 2,850mm wheelbase, making it slightly larger than the outgoing Toyota LC Prado. Under the hood, the Tank 500 is powered by a 2.0L turbocharged four-cylinder petrol hybrid system delivering a staggering output of combined 346hp/615Nm and drives all four wheels via a 9-speed automatic gearbox.
In addition to the above-mentioned engine, the Tank 500 in overseas markets also comes equipped with a choice of a 3.0L mild-hybrid V6 petrol engine good for 348hp/500Nm or the more formidable 2.0L hybrid setup for 402hp/750Nm. GWM Australia has previously stated that all three powertrains are on the cards for Australia as the company looks to maximize its opportunities for success in the segment.

The homologation data also reveal the Tank 500 has a braked towing capacity of 3,000kg which is exactly the same as Toyota Prado, and an unbraked towing capacity of 750kg. The approval documents also reveal the GWM Tank 500 will come standard with 18-inch alloy wheels, though 19- and 20-inch wheels will be optional.
Inside, the Tank 500 boasts a 12.3-inch digital instrument cluster and a 14.6-inch touchscreen infotainment system. The multi-tone luxury interior boasts Nappa leather upholstery, a panoramic sunroof, as well as heated and ventilated front seats with 8 different massage modes.
Ever since it was unveiled in 2021, and went on sale in 2022, GWM is really committed to making the Tank 500 a competitive alternative to the Toyota LC Prado. Additionally, in markets where it is available, Tank 500 is already regarded as a Prado rival and is receiving praise. Besides, BAIC’s BJ60 SUV is also emerging as a Prado rival in the same league.
