It’s always interesting to see how vehicles perform in terms of sales in markets where competition is intense, such as Thailand where 9 vehicles compete in a single subcompact sedan segment of the market. This is also the Eco-2 category, which means vehicles falling in this segment must strictly qualify to meet the below standards:

  • CO2 emissions not more than 100g/km
  • Euro-V Emission Standard
  • Fuel consumption not less than 23.25 km per liter
  • ABS, EBD, BA as standard across entire range
  • VSA & balance control systems as standard across entire range

Since late 2019 the competition in this segment became even fierce in Thailand with the introduction of all new Nissan Almera (Sunny) 1.0L turbo & all new Honda City 1.0L turbo followed by Mazda2 facelift. Then in 2020 Toyota introduced the Yaris/ Yaris Ativ facelift equipped with Toyota Safety Sense Suite to lure Thai buyers.

Although like any other part of the world, sales took a hit in the first half of 2020 due to COVID-19 pandemic & lockdowns that halted the economic activities and off course vehicle sales. But from August 2020 the market witnessed steady recovery with Honda City hitting 3,000+ sales mark for 5 consecutive months. Bear in mind the City hatchback as well as the e:HEV hybrid sedan variant were added to the lineup in November 2020. Thus the all new Honda City came on top as the bestselling car in Thailand in year 2020 with more than 35,807 units under its belt captivating a 35% market share.
