The Ioniq 6 won the World Car of the Year Award (WCOTY) for 2023, enabling Hyundai to become the first automaker to do it twice in a succession. The previous year’s title was won by the Hyundai Ioniq 5 EV.
The Hyundai Ioniq 6 was one of three finalists for the WCOTY award, which it won edging past the BMW X1/iX1 and the Kia Niro. The trophy was presented at the ongoing New York International Auto Show. Commenting on the achievement, Jaehoon Chang, President and CEO of Hyundai Motor Company said:
“We are thrilled to receive this prestigious honor two years in a row, which recognizes the tremendous talents and unrelenting efforts of everyone at Hyundai Motor Company to bring EVs like Ioniq 6 to market.”
But just as the previous year’s win by Ioniq 5 which grabbed 2 more titles in addition to the WCOTY, the new Ioniq 6 also won two other awards including the World Car Design of the Year as well as the World Electric Vehicle Awards, making it a triple winner.
Hyundai Ioniq 6 won the EV award over the BMW i7 and the Lucid Air. It had to compete for the Design title against the Range Rover and the Lucid Air.

Other winners included the Lucid Air as World Luxury Vehicle, which had to beat out the BMW 7 Series and the Genesis G90 for the title. The Kia EV6 GT was voted World Performance Vehicle of the Year, beating out the new Nissan Z and the all-wheel-drive Toyota GR Corolla. The Citroen C3 won the World Urban Car Award, beating out the VW Taigo and the ORA Funky Cat.

The World Car Awards jury this year consisted of 100 worldwide automotive journalists from 32 different countries. To select this year’s COTY finalists and winner, which will receive trophies made by automotive designer Ian Callum, the jury had to narrow down a list of 30 new vehicles.
