Isuzu has teased its upcoming 2.2-liter MaxForce turbodiesel engine, set to power the D-Max pickup truck and the MU-X three-row SUV.
Derived from the RZ4E 1.9-liter four-cylinder turbodiesel, the new 2.2-liter unit features an increased displacement and a newly designed turbocharger. Although official power and torque figures are yet to be disclosed, it is being reported that the engine will be “more powerful” and “faster” than its predecessor.
Currently, high-spec variants of the D-Max are equipped with the 4JJ3-TCX 3.0-liter turbodiesel, producing 190 PS at 3,600 rpm and 450 Nm of torque between 1,600 rpm and 2,600 rpm. It remains unclear whether the new 2.2-liter engine will replace one or both of the existing engines in the D-Max and MU-X lineup.

In most markets, the Isuzu D-Max, currently in its third generation gets both the 1.9 liter and 3.0 liter turbodiesel engines. In Pakistan however, Isuzu still sells the obsolete 2nd-generation D-Max with an old 3.0-liter engine (not the only available with the 3rd-gen D-Max). Despite being at the bottom of domestic sales charts, Isuzu has no plans to upgrade the D-Max in Pakistan or introduce the MU-X to give competition to its rivals.
