Kia India is celebrating a significant milestone—achieving 1 million unit sales in the domestic market in just 59 months of operations. As one of the fastest-growing premium carmakers in the country, this accomplishment highlights Kia’s strong influence on the Indian automotive landscape.
The Seltos, Kia’s flagship model, has played a pivotal role in this success, representing over 48% of the company’s total domestic sales. The Kia Sonet and Kia Carens have also made significant contributions, accounting for 34% and 16% of sales respectively.
Since its debut in 2019, Kia has revolutionized the Indian automotive market with its advanced technology and innovative design, quickly becoming one of the most aspirational car brands in the country. Notably, 42% of Kia’s sales are from top trims, defying the perception that India is primarily a cost-sensitive market. Kia’s focus on offering advanced transmission options has also proven successful, with automatic transmissions—IVT, 6AT, and 7DCT—comprising 32% of total sales. Additionally, the innovative iMT (Intelligent Manual Transmission), introduced with the Sonet in 2020, accounts for another 15%. Moreover, the brand’s current Petrol to Diesel sales ratio is 59% to 41%.
Kia India’s growth has been remarkable. Starting with 45,226 units sold in 2019, the company’s sales volume has consistently grown year after year—rising to 140,505 units in 2020, 181,583 units in 2021, and 254,556 units in 2022. Last year, Kia achieved annual sales of 255,000 units, and the momentum continues into 2024, with nearly 150,000 units sold in just the first 7 months. This strong performance positions the company well for the upcoming festive season.
Moreover, India plays a vital role as an export hub for Kia, with over 260,000 units shipped to more than 100 international markets. Including these exports, Kia India’s cumulative sales have reached nearly 1.3 million units. This milestone not only highlights Kia’s success in India but also reinforces its standing as a significant player in the global automotive industry.
