Mazda has finally unveiled the all new 3rd generation BT-50 pickup truck replacing the 2nd gen model that lasted for nearly 9 years. While the 2nd gen BT-50 was based on the Ford Ranger, the latest model is based on the all new 3rd gen Isuzu D-Max that made its debut in October last year.

Although based on the Isuzu D-Max, the new Mazda BT-50 boasts its own unique styling effectively differentiating itself from the donor model. Employing the signature kodo design language, the all-new BT-50 resembles its crossover sibling, the Mazda CX-9 while combining utility and luxury in an attractive-looking package. Maintaining its smooth and classier design theme, the BT-50 gets a simpler tailgate and unique set of wrap-around tail lamps which are different than those offered with the latest D-Max however the 18-inch wheels are the same as its Isuzu donor.

Inside, the simple and classy theme continues with a dashboard that is again unique to the BT-50 while featuring a horizontal design with the head unit flanked by air vents. The overall design and appearance of the interior is pretty much car-like & much evolved than what we see on regular pickup trucks. According to Mazda:
“The all-new BT-50 design expresses the unique beauty of Mazda’s Kodo Soul of Motion design theme with power, toughness and utilitarian functionality suited to a pickup truck. Mazda developed the BT-50 with the intention of making travel and the time spent inside the vehicle exceptionally pleasant.”
Under the hood there is Isuzu’s 3.0 liter 4JJ3-TCX turbo-diesel with 190 hp of power and 450 Nm of torque paired to 6-speed manual and automatic transmissions. With reduced body weight and a more frugal engine, the new BT-50 will see a significant improvement in fuel economy. Mazda says the towing capacity is 3,500 kg and payload is over 1,000 kg for enhanced practicality.
