Nissan Might Sell Majority Stake To Honda

Nissan is facing significant financial challenges, with production at its U.S. facilities dropping by nearly 20% and dealers selling cars at a loss. In an effort to stay afloat, the company has cut over 9,000 jobs and sold a third of its stake in Mitsubishi. Despite these efforts, Nissan’s outlook remains grim, with the threat of a potential shutdown becoming increasingly imminent.

A report from the Financial Times highlights the severity of the crisis. Two Nissan executives revealed that the company may only have 12 to 14 months of financial runway remaining. They emphasized the urgent need for both Japan and the U.S. operations to start generating cash, underscoring the challenging road ahead.

Nissan is seeking a bank or insurance group as a new long-term investor to resolve its financial struggles. This new partner would effectively take over part of Renault’s equity stake in the company. However, Nissan might also consider collaborating with another Japanese brand to navigate its current financial challenges.

Nissan might sell its majority stake to Honda, following Honda’s recent long-term partnership for battery electric vehicle development, as the company considers “all options.” Meanwhile, Renault, a key partner in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance, is reportedly also interested in selling part of its shares to Honda. The report includes a statement from an unnamed source highlighting that a Honda-Nissan partnership could prove advantageous for Renault, too.
