Pak Suzuki launched the 8th gen Alto 660cc in June as a replacement of the entry level 800cc Mehran which was originally the 2nd generation of Alto hatchback. Despite the auto industry facing extreme slowdown, the Alto 660cc quickly went on to become the bestselling car of the country.
Within the first 3 months of its launch, Pak Suzuki gave 2 major price revisions to the Alto. Despite the absurdly high price as considered by many, the sales of Alto were soaring. In September 2019, the Alto 660cc broke Pak Suzuki’s highest-ever monthly sales record by registering sales of 4,924 units surpassing the previously held record of Suzuki Mehran which was 4,684 units.
However now the craze of Pak Suzuki Alto seems to be subduing as in November 2,967 units were sold compared to 4,048 units in October, which reflects a 27% decline in sales on month-on-month basis. This is also the lowest ever figure for Alto 660cc ever since it was launched in Pakistan.
It is largely believed that the Alto sales were high due to thousands of pre-bookings the company collected prior to the launch without having the need to display the vehicle. Now as the booked units have been delivered, the ballooned demand of Alto is coming back to normal. It is also believed that sales are slowing down as the end-of-year approaches since buyers generally avoid buying cars in this period and are willing to get a fresh model year car in January.
The Alto 660cc has kept Pak Suzuki alive during these tough times as Honda and Toyota are already observing non-production days for a few months already. Sparing Alto, Pak Suzuki is also suffering from a horrible -68% decline in sales. It will sure be interesting to see if the sales of Alto remain low or will it recover again in January.
