The second generation of Suzuki Swift debuted at the Paris Motor Show in September 2004, and is still available in Pakistan being sold by Pak Suzuki Motors. When Pak Suzuki launched the 2nd generation Swift in Pakistan in 2010, the third version of Swift was already introduced in global markets, and is about to be replaced by a newer model soon.
The all-new 4th generation Swift is at the verge of its global launch & is likely to go on sale, first in Europe probably by 2017 and will follow in Asia by 2018. The next generation Swift has been spied testing on public roads in Europe & leaked renderings are already on the internet. It is likely that the new Swift will be unveiled at this year’s Paris Motor Show in October. The Swift will now sit below the new Baleno in Suzuki’s product portfolio.
The new Swift will have a slightly harder edge to it, while still retaining styling cues that first appeared on the 2004 model. New elements include hidden rear door handles, LED driving lights, and a floating roof look that’s achieved with the help of a black plastic sash on the D-pillar. On the inside, the new Swift has a more appealing and up-market look to it. Ahead of the driver, there’s a flat-bottomed steering wheel. In the center there are rotary climate control dials, a large touch-screen infotainment display, and circular air vents. The interior setup appears to be more premium than the one seen on the current model.
According to the initial reports the entry level Swifts will be powered by 1.0-litre three-cylinder turbo engine with 82kW/170Nm, while the Swift Sport will be powered by a 103kW/220Nm 1.4-litre turbocharged direct-injection engine. The Asian version will likely get a 1.0 liter all-aluminum Boosterjet engine which churns out a max power 74kW/140Nm.
The new Swift is likely to benefit from a light-weight platform that will be borrowed from the new Baleno. This new platform not only guarantees weight savings but also a better crash protection. Additionally, a light kerb weight will ensure that the new Swift will have a better fuel average.
It is again quite disappointing for us that halfway through 2016 when the world is about to get the 4th generation Suzuki Swift, we are still stuck with the 12 year old Swift being offered to us by Pak Suzuki at an exorbitant price with less safety equipment, and there is no news for a model upgrade in Pakistan any time soon.
Also note that price of the current 3rd generation Swift in India starts from just INR 4.72 lac (equals to PKR 7.31 lac) while in Pakistan the old 2nd generation is available for PKR 12.21 lac and goes up to PKR 14.33 lac for the fully loaded version. Even if Pak Suzuki brings the 3rd generation Swift to Pakistan in a couple of years, by that time the car would be retired from the international markets already. Pak Suzuki need to catch up to the rest of the world and should avoid offering us the stuff that has been discarded by the world several years ago!
