Used JDM cars brought much-needed variety to the local automotive market, especially after their resurgence in the mid-2000s. Many cars from Japan, despite not being backed by any warranty or authorized after-sales support, saw immense success in our market.
Among those, the Toyota Probox, a compact station wagon, made its mark as a practical and economical vehicle in Pakistan between 2011 and 2014. Originally introduced in Japan in 2002 as a commercial vehicle aimed at businesses, it found a surprisingly strong fan base in Pakistan, despite its utilitarian design and lack of luxurious features.
The Probox was classified as Light Commercial Vehicles (LCVs) in Japan and should not be mistaken for traditional station wagons or estate cars, as the likes of Toyota Probox were specifically designed and marketed as delivery vans for commercial purposes.

The Probox was designed as a simple, durable, and spacious vehicle, targeted primarily at businesses in need of an affordable cargo mover. Equipped with either a 1.3L or 1.5L engine, it offered reliability, fuel efficiency, and ease of maintenance. In its home market of Japan, the Probox was a popular choice among delivery companies and small businesses, primarily used for transporting goods and supplies.
The Toyota Probox Popularity in Pakistan
The Probox gained attention in Pakistan, particularly between 2011 and 2014. Several factors contributed to its brief spike in popularity, such as:
- Affordability
The Probox, being an older and less glamorous model, was often priced lower than other imported cars. For budget-conscious buyers, it was an attractive option. - Durability and Reliability
Pakistani car buyers have always appreciated durable vehicles, and the Probox fits the bill perfectly. With its sturdy engine and straightforward design, it proved to be a reliable option for both personal and commercial use. - Fuel Efficiency
With rising fuel prices in Pakistan, the Probox’s efficient engines offered a more economical alternative to many local and imported options. - Versatility
The Probox was particularly popular among families as well as small business owners. Its spacious interior made it ideal for carrying passengers, luggage, or even light cargo.
Why the Popularity Declined
Despite its initial success, the popularity of the Toyota Probox began to wane after 2014. Several factors contributed to this decline:
- Aesthetic Limitations:
The Probox’s plain and boxy design made it less appealing as more modern and stylish cars became available. - Lack of Comfort:
Since the Probox was designed primarily as a delivery vehicle, only the front seats offered any level of comfort, while the rear seats were notably hard and uncomfortable. As a result, many owners opted to replace the rear seats with more comfortable aftermarket alternatives. - Rise of Other Imports:
The import market diversified, with more feature-rich and comfortable vehicles like the Toyota Sienta entering the fray. - Policy Changes:
Government regulations tightened on used car imports, making it more expensive to bring in vehicles like the Probox. The older age of vehicles was restricted to 3 years or less, making it nearly impossible to import the older Probox models into the country.
The biggest issue, however, came after the 2012 floods in Japan, when many flood-affected units were imported to Pakistan. These vehicles while looked pristine on the outside, later revealed numerous hidden problems, including rust, jammed bolts, and other serious issues.

The popularity of the Toyota Probox also paved the way for other delivery vans, such as the Honda Partner, Mitsubishi Lancer Wagon, and Nissan AD Van. However, none managed to achieve the same level of success as the Probox. This trend was soon followed by an influx of better-equipped station wagons, including the Toyota Succeed, Toyota Fielder, Toyota Wish & Prius Alpha, Honda Fit Shuttle, and Nissan Wingroad, among others.
Though its popularity was short-lived, the Toyota Probox carved out a niche in Pakistan’s recent automotive history. Even today, it remains a familiar sight in smaller cities and sub-urban areas, used as a workhorse for small businesses and families alike. Its practicality, reliability, and affordability are still remembered by those who owned or used it during its heyday. These days, in the used car market, the Toyota Probox is available for PKR 2.5 to 3.0 million, making it a budget-friendly option for many.

The Toyota Probox’s popularity also highlights the country’s unique automotive trends, where affordability and practicality often outweigh aesthetics and luxury. While it may never have achieved the cult status of other imported vehicles, the Probox remains an example of how a simple, purpose-built car can make a significant impact in a developing market.
